In the mid-2000s, Shibuya’s club scene served as one of the origins of Japanese artist Enrico Isamu Oyama’s practice in live painting.
At that time, Shibuya was filled with loosely defined alternative spaces where young people gathered. Today, in the Reiwa era, redevelopment is transforming this “city of youth.” But is this transformation simply a rupture? Sociologist Sharon Zukin observed that urban authenticity is renewed through the fusion of “origins” and “new beginnings” ̶ the latter eventually becoming the next origin.
This insight aptly resonates with today’s Shibuya.
This exhibition presents video documentation of live painting performances held in Shibuya’s clubs during the 2000s across three monitors. The footage is more than personal recollection; it stands as a record of a time when Shibuya, as a hub of club culture, saw painters interact and form a sense of collective identity within the genre. Although fragmentary, the videos convey the energy of those scenes. Now that the young people of that era have become adults, can the fragments of memory be reconnected with today’s Shibuya?
We hope this exhibition offers not mere nostalgia for the “origin,” but nourishment for future “new beginnings.” It marks the starting point of LGSA by EIOS, where the cycles of urban and personal time resonate together.
Related events will be organized during the exhibition period. Details will be announced on the official website and SNS channels.
*Clubs featured in the footage include Ebisu Milk, Shibuya Game, and Shimokitazawa Wedge.
