LGSA by EIOS is pleased to present Indelible Light Mechanism, a memorial exhibition for Chris Mendoza.
Christian Aaron Mendoza (1972–2026) was an artist based in New York and Miami. Rooted in the culture of aerosol writing, his work brings together a wide range of imaginative elements: geometric lines reminiscent of architectural drafting, poetic language and colors, visions of speed and science fiction, and a fascination with ancient civilizations connected to his own heritage. These elements converge to form a distinctive inner landscape. Underlying his artistic practice were the influence of his father, an architect, and his experience of urban life in New York.
One key to understanding Mendoza’s work lies in the relationship between architectural drafting and the act of drawing lines. In conventional architectural drafting, lines are subordinate to the image of a designed structure, serving to communicate its form and construction. Mendoza overturns this hierarchy. By focusing on the act of drawing itself, he moves between geometric regularity and free movement, bringing imaginary structures into existence on the canvas. The precision of drafting merges with the spontaneity of aerosol writing, while memories of the past overlap with visions of the future. From the accumulation of lines emerge structures of science-fiction fantasy.
Another creative principle running through Mendoza’s work is hip-hop. In his sticker collages, existing materials are cut apart and reassembled into new visual forms. His distinctive idiom, animated with the energy of free jazz and shaped by the fusion of multiple contexts, also exists alongside contemporary methods of sampling and remixing made possible by technologies of reproduction. Bringing ancient civilizations and electronic culture, traces of the city and the laws of the cosmos, into coexistence within a single image. Connecting seemingly disparate elements. This sensibility pulses through the deeper layers of Mendoza’s artistic expression.
As a member of art collectives such as the Inkheads and Barnstormers, both known in Japan, Mendoza maintained connections with the Japanese art scene. LGSA by EIOS holds two works acquired directly from the artist. Including these, the exhibition is a tribute to Chris Mendoza, bringing together four works preserved by several individuals in Japan who shared personal relationships with him. The provenance of these works itself speaks to the human networks and cultural connections cultivated across national borders. Their trajectory also constitutes a document of its time, resonating with the words Mendoza frequently used and that now serve as the title of this exhibition.
I would also like to share a personal recollection. In December 2019, just before my book The Real Faces of Street Art went to press, Mendoza contacted me with the news of the passing of PHASE2, a pioneer of aerosol writing. His death is noted at the end of the book. Approximately six and a half years later, in May 2026, COCO144, a longtime friend and collaborator of PHASE2, visited Japan for his solo exhibition at LGSA by EIOS. During his visit, I learned that Mendoza had been hospitalized in critical condition. Soon afterward, I learned of his passing. In my mind, these two losses became unexpectedly connected. It was Mendoza who informed me of PHASE2’s passing, and COCO144 who later told me of Mendoza’s critical condition. This sequence of events reminds me that the history of aerosol writing has been woven not only through artworks and documentation, but, above all, through relationships between people across generations. The loss of talented artists brings a profound sense of absence. Yet as words pass from person to person, artworks change hands, and intentions are carried forward, memories and sensibilities continue to live on. I hope this exhibition will offer an opportunity to share the richness of Chris Mendoza’s artistic expression and character.
Profile
Christian Aaron Mendoza
Christian Aaron Mendoza was an artist who lived and worked in New York and Miami. Born in Managua, Nicaragua, in 1972, he developed an early interest in architectural drafting and ancient civilizations through the influence of his father, an architect. In 1984, at the age of twelve, Mendoza and his family fled the Second Nicaraguan Civil War and relocated to New York City. Growing up in the Bronx, he was introduced to aerosol writing and hip-hop culture, adopting the tag name EDEC. In 1988, Mendoza moved to Miami, Florida, before returning to the Bronx in 1990, where he began pursuing aerosol writing in earnest. He was a founding member of the writing collective Inkheads, established in 1992, and helped expand the collective to Miami in 1993. He later became involved with the New York-based art collective Barnstormers, developing an artistic practice that took him across the United States and internationally. Mendoza exhibited his work in Japan at venues including DYEZU EXPERIMENT!, Calm & Punk Gallery, and WAG Gallery. Throughout his career, he developed a distinctive visual language that combined the precision of architectural drafting with the spontaneity of aerosol writing. He died in 2026.
